PRICING POLICY

For some years, I have set prices for framed and unframed prints. Now I am experimenting with a modified “pay what you want” model.

I love the idea of the gift economy, which depends upon reciprocity and trust, and builds connections and community.

It is also a hard fact that there are costs involved in producing even digital images, let alone prints. Framing adds another layer of costs. There are also costs involved in purchasing and maintaining equipment, and maintaining a studio and website. This is before we consider how much time I put in, which could be anything from an hour up to ten hours per image.

Some of the Buddhist retreats I have participated in have used a model whereby there is a set charge that covers venue hire and the cost of food, and anything above that — including compensation for the teachers, but also supporting the longer term administrative and promotional costs of the centre — is at the discretion of the giver. One of the advantages of this system is that the retreat is affordable for people who would not otherwise be able to attend. Another very real benefit is that it affords an opportunity for ‘buyers’ to practise generosity, and for ‘sellers’ to receive a gift. The interaction is personal and meaningful; neither party hides behind a role. It can also be edgy — how much can you really afford to give, and how much is this item or service worth to you? On the other side of the equation, what is it like to trust that people will exercise generosity? What is it like to be supported, but not be in control of that support?

Below, I have listed the actual costs of producing various types and sizes of unframed prints. Framed prints are also available if you can collect them in-person, either from my studio or from an exhibition or an event such as Artwave in Lewes.

My time and expertise are not included in these costs.

Please pay what you want, and what you can. Payment may be made by bank transfer or Paypal. Just get in touch using the “mail” icon to tell me which images you want, and in what format.

GICLEE PRINTS

Images found under “People” and “Places” are available as giclee prints on archival art paper, in two sizes:

30x40cm £18

40x50cm £28

Botanical images can also be done as giclee prints, but lend themselves particularly well to printing on aluminium:

ALUMINIUM PRINTS

Aluminium prints are lightweight composite panels consisting of a hard synthetic core enclosed between two aluminium sheets. The prints are laminated to prevent UV damage, and are suitable for rooms with high levels of humidity. They come with fixtures to facilitate easy hanging.

20x30cm £19

30x40cm £32

60x80cm £62

Box frame for 30x40cm print add £19

Aluminium prints are sturdy and do not require framing as long as they are hung somewhere they are unlikely to be knocked about.

However, I think they look even better when displayed in a box frame, which makes the images look like they are floating in space. Many different types of box frames are available; my particular favourite is the Radcliffe Box Frame supplied by The Frame Company. Unfortunately they do not come with non-reflective glass, but you can easily find non-reflective glass or perspex online. Both frames and perspex are very reasonably priced.
