Originating in Central Asia, tulips have been cultivated in Persia since at least the 10th century; they were prized by the Ottoman sultans, and the “tulipmania” of 17th century Europe is legendary. I love them best as they start to fade, swooning languid and louche over the side of a vase, the petals curling sensuously.
